Public Sector Special Interest Group – Change in Leadership
For the past few years Ann Poritzky of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has served as chair of the DAA Public Sector Special Interest Group. During that time, the group conducted research on how public sector and nonprofit organizations use web analytics. Working with Phil Kemelor, the group used an online survey and personal interviews to collect information. Ann managed the production of the 50-page Tapping the Potential of Public Sector and Non-Profit Web Sites research report. The group also sponsored a webinar on the report, co-presented by Ann Poritzky and Phil Kemelor, which attracted 149 viewers. The group is currently working on the first in a series of two-page "tool kits" for new and experienced Web analytics professionals.
As of January, Ann will be stepping down as chair and turning the reins over to Tim Evans, who is retiring from the Social Security Administration. Tim has been an active member of the group for three years, and served as Co-Chair of the Federal Web Managers Council’s Metrics SubCouncil for several years. (In a brilliant swap, Ann is taking over this position.) He is looking forward to continuing the great work that has already been done. We expect to publish the first tool kit referenced above—focusing on using ROI analysis to demonstrate value in Public Sector web sites.
Building on this work, subsequent tool kits will focus on establishing an analytics culture in the Public Sector, a particularly difficult problem in an environment when bottom lines are difficult to determine and authority over web sites and their infrastructure is highly fragmented. In addition, the Special Interest Group will monitor and support the movement toward use of persistent cookies in Federal Government web sites, previously prohibited except in very exceptional cases. New Office of Management and Budget policies issued in 2010 on Web Measurement and Customization allow for widespread use of cookies, but adoption has been slow in Government. New OMB policies on use of Social Media by Federal agencies are also being adopted by agencies, and the Public Sector SIG will monitor and assist Government activities here.
Many thanks to Ann for her years of dedication to the DAA and thanks to Tim for stepping up as the new chair!

Web Analytics Growing in the Czech Republic
The web analytics space in the Czech Republic is gaining momentum! Approximately 80 enthusiastic analytics professionals met in Prague on the 10th of November for another Web Analytics Wednesday event, hosted by Jiri Brazda. Attendees heard local experts talk about conversion, rate optimization, and online testing. We hope this growth call is going to be answered from other Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries as well with Slovakia being the first to step up and form its very own DAA local chapter. Wish us luck!
