Moving Beyond Excel and Becoming More Data Science-y

Data science, machine learning, deep(!) learning, artificial intelligence, R, Python, Data Studio, Analysis Workspace, Tableau, Qlik, Domo. What happened to the good old days when a digital analyst could simply VLOOKUP her way to greatness with nothing more than Microsoft Excel and a data automation plugin or two?! In this session, Tim will explore his own journey from being a defender of the Almighty Spreadsheet to being a dabbler in the world of programming with data, to becoming a true believer that the bridge that is being built between digital analytics and data science, while a small rickety structure today, is rapidly being solidified into a robust and permanent pathway to an exciting future.

Key takeaways:

  • Data science and BI are two separate paths forward from Excel. There are cases for jumping between the two, but they are fundamentally different disciplines.
  • The key to doing statistics (and data science) with digital analytics data is to shift from aggregated to detailed data (and what that means)
  • While our stakeholders yearn for "the truth," the only truth is that we are always working with uncertainty; there is a very real cost to reducing uncertainty; and uncertainty can never be eliminated.
